My hero is Phil Mickelson, a professional golfer on the PGA Tour. Phil Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970 (48 years of age) in San Diego, California to Mary Mickelson and Phil Mickelson Sr. Phil Mickelson attended college at Arizona State University before entering the PGA Tour. From there, he went on to marry Amy Mickelson, and preceded to have 3 kids: Evan, Sophia, and Amanda. Phil Mickelson is an all-time great, with 44 PGA Tour wins (and counting), 5 of them being Majors (3 Masters, 1 PGA Championship, and 1 Open Championship). He is currently 9th on the all-time leader board for amount of PGA Tour wins, sitting behind legends such as Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
Becoming a successful athlete isn’t achieved through pure talent or luck. Phil Mickelson didn’t get to where he is today without hard work either, in fact, he is one of the hardest workers on the PGA Tour, and has been a hard worker for his entire life.
Phil Mickelson was not raised in the wealthiest family growing up, they weren’t poor, but they definitely didn’t live in luxury, with his father working as a pilot, and his mother staying home to raise him and his siblings. Phil was introduced to golf by his father, and when Phil fell in love, they had to be creative when practicing. Phil’s father would build replications such as bunkers and greens in their backyard. Phil would stay outside night and day, putting, pitching, and chipping, as well as working on signature shots along the way. Today, Phil Mickelson is now known for his mesmerizing short game play, and his famous flop shot, no one else can even begin to replicate.
Phil is also known for his kindness on tour. Phil is always one of the first players to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Phil’s personality is very vibrant, bringing joy to anyone and everyone, both players and fans. He has a very competitive nature, but always a good attitude, never letting the fans see the bad side of him, even when he is playing poorly. There are only a handful of very successful athletes, that take the time to appreciate the fans like he does, and that is why he is hands down, the most popular player on tour.
Phil is my hero because his work ethic, all the way from his childhood to today, is something I strive to replicate, when I practice each day. His emphasis on the importance of short game, as helped me and my game greatly. Also, his vibrant personality is probably the most desirable trait of his, and I strive to keep the same attitude on the course that he has.
